Diode Laser-Based Methane Detection

U. S. Patent 7,710,568, issued May 4, 2010

Schematic drawing of patented methane sensor

Natural gas is an important component of the world's energy supply. It is conveniently delivered to homes and factories by means of pressurized, underground pipelines. This invention provides a safe, convenient method to check for leaks in the natural gas delivery system. Air is sampled into a chamber (20) traversed by a laser. The laser is tuned to scan across an absorption feature of methane in such a way that concentrations from 1 part per million to 100% can be measured, allowing the leak to be safely traced back to its source.
